MODEST REVIEWS: Joyful Noise (Todd Graff, 2012)

There is no elegant way to say this: If you think this movie is going to be good, then you are a terrible person and I hope a fire takes you slowly.

Does anyone actually like Queen Latifah at this point? When is the last time you heard anyone, anywhere, say something like “that Queen Latifah is hilarious! She is so zany and quirky and entertaining!”. The answer to that question is never. No one has ever said that. Queen Latifah is not funny, endearing, talented, and helps make this movie a disaster no Italian Cruise-Liner could ever hope to compete with.

This movie is a formulaic, forgettable, and low-stakes tale about a choir competition and a rift between those silly, old-fashioned, racist adults and those wide-eyed, lovestruck teenagers. It’s themes include love, the lord, Dolly Parton’s tits, and melting your brain. This is the WalMart of movies. This movie is literally bad for you.

Don’t fucking see it.
